What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are thing porcelain shells that can be placed over the teeth, altering how they appear. This can change the shape, size, and color of the teeth, allowing this single treatment to handle a stunning variety of issues. Whether you’re unhappy with yellow teeth, a crooked smile, chips, cracks, or some combination of all of these things, this treatment can deal with all of them within as little as two appointments.
The Process of Getting Veneers
As with any cosmetic treatment, the first step will be to talk to you about your individual needs and to decide whether veneers are the right treatment for you. If together we determine that this is the case, we will begin preparing the teeth for the placement of veneers, which involves removing a small amount of enamel. Of course, we will numb your mouth completely before this is done.
We’ll then take impressions of your now-modified teeth and use this to design what your eventual veneers will look like. These designs will be sent to a specialized lab, and in the meantime your teeth will be protected by temporary veneers. Once your permanent cosmetics are prepared, we’ll call you in for your next appointment and put them in place.
Benefits of Veneers
Cosmetic dentistry is rich with treatments that can create beautiful smiles, but among them, veneers stand apart in the results that they can produce. Not only are they able to address an incredible number of issues, but they can do so incredibly quickly.
Moreover, veneers are made from a stain resistant porcelain, meaning that they’ll continue to shine for a long time to come. In fact, most veneers last over 15 years before needing to be replaced.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
As you may know, veneers are considered to be a purely elective treatment by insurance companies, meaning that they’re unlikely to be covered. For that reason, you may have to pursue other options in order to make the care affordable. For example, we often work with CareCredit, a firm that provides financing services at little-to-no additional interest.
If you’re curious about this or any other financial option available to you, give us a call and we’ll be happy to talk to you about them.
Veneers FAQs
How Much Enamel Is Removed for Veneers?
The amount of enamel we take off your teeth is very slim. In fact, it’s usually about 0.5 mm, which is about the same thickness as a contact lens. We have to remove this sliver from your tooth to make room for the veneer. Otherwise, it would stand out in an unpleasant way. In other words, it would draw the wrong kind of attention to your smile! Although this permanent change to your teeth means you’ll always need veneers, these products are extremely durable and visually pleasing.
What Maintenance Is Involved with Veneers?
If you want your veneers to last 15 years or longer, you’ll need to take care of them. Fortunately, maintenance is simple and easy to include in your lifestyle. All you need to do is brush and floss your teeth daily—just as you should anyway—and come to our office for regular checkups and cleanings.
To further extend your veneers’ lifespan, you can consume less sugar in your diet, avoid deeply pigmented foods and drinks, and avoid biting or chewing on hard objects like pencils or ice.
Will My Veneers Look Fake?
Veneers are made of dental porcelain, which when crafted to the individual patient looks just like natural enamel. It reflects light similarly, and many people can’t tell the difference. Plus, with the tiny amount of enamel removed leaves room for the veneer, so the prosthetic should lay flush and appear realistic, meaning others should only see your beautiful, confident smile.
How Long Does It Take to Get Veneers?
As previously mentioned, receiving custom veneers takes two appointments, and it usually takes the dental lab a couple of weeks to craft the porcelain and ship it back to us. If you are planning on getting veneers by a scheduled date for a special event, make sure you allow plenty of time to complete treatment in advance, and let us know about your goals and plans during your consultation.
Do I Have to Get Goopy, Messy Impressions for Veneers?
Nope! While some dental offices still utilize putty impressions, which are often uncomfortable and even inaccurate, our team takes advantage of cutting-edge technology. Our digital impression system has a small device that easily fits in your mouth and takes measurements of your upper and lower arches. In just a couple of minutes, this system collects information and creates a 3D model of your mouth, which we can see on our screens and make sure it is correct before we send it to our lab. As a result, you not only have a more comfortable experience in the chair but your veneers are more precisely customized to your unique smile!
